Spirulina is a microscopic cyanobacterium, commonly called blue-green algae. Its dried biomass contains protein, iron and other nutrients. At Properly, we cultivate it in Madagascar using established production protocols.

Meet spirulina and chlorella, the ingredients at the heart of Properly.
A different kind of green
Chlorella is a single-celled green microalga containing protein, chlorophyll and micronutrients. We’re developing it as a complementary part of the Properly range.
Promising science. A purpose worth pursuing.
Human studies have reported encouraging results for algae-based combinations in relation to toxic metals. A small randomised trial of spirulina extract plus zinc in people with chronic arsenic poisoning reported increased arsenic excretion and improvements in skin symptoms. A separate small study of chlorella with other supplements reported reductions in selected metal measurements. This research gives us a compelling reason to explore algae’s potential, and to build Properly around carefully produced ingredients and transparent science. The findings apply to the combinations studied; they do not establish a metal-removal effect for Properly products.
Better nutrition begins close to home
Most of our current spirulina production is donated through the Red Cross to support nutrition in communities near Toliara. Spirulina can contribute nutrients to a varied diet; addressing malnutrition also requires adequate food, healthcare and programmes tailored to local needs.

On our land near Toliara, we cultivate spirulina with care and share most of our production through the Red Cross to support community nutrition.
Our next ambition is to acquire up to 200 hectares near Antsirabe and develop a regenerative farming community, bringing together food production, care for the land, local livelihoods and shared learning. Beyond Madagascar, we are actively looking for suitable locations and partners to build regenerative farms and communities around the world.
